FiRST COCOA* workshop on
Schatten meets Sobolev: commutators and friends
December 14-17, 2026
Aalto University, Finland
*Supported by the Research Council of Finland through projects:
Description
Over the past few years, there have been interesting discoveries and interaction between surprising new characterizations of classical function spaces (e.g., by derivative-free and weak-type formulas), and mapping properties (including but not limited to Schatten class membership) of commutators, their complex-variable cousins: the Hankel operators, and other related objects. Motivated by both intrinsic interest and applications, these results often build on recent advances in commutative (dyadic representations, median techniques, …) and/or non-commutative (Schur multipliers, principal symbol mappings, …) analysis, where the two may offer alternative perspectives and/or combine their forces. Fostering exchange of ideas across borders, this workshop brings together researchers working in such distinct but interrelated directions. We hope to cover a spectrum of topics around characterizations of function spaces and mapping properties of commutators, ranging from tools to applications, and from reports of latest achievements to surveys of longer-term developments.
